With power comes enemies. Lots of them.
Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He's learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can't seem to afford any allies.
He's up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.
Then there's Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She's not hostile. She's bold. Funny. Hot. But she's got an agenda, too.
With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he'll have to find someone he can trust. .
This story is about Hunter. Hunter is a 5th which means a lot of power but it also means he is destined to be a Guide which he does not want. Through this story we learn more about his father and what kind of Guide he was. And he was not like the others.
We are introduced to Kate. Kate is drawn to Hunter and can't stop thinking about him. Kate needs to get close to the Merrick's because her and Silver are Guides & their job is to take out the ones that are causing problems as well as take out the ones that have too much power, even if they have done nothing wrong. Kate has her own problems with this last part, she does not want to hurt an innocent. She does not think they deserve to be killed just for being born Full Elementals. Silver on the other hand is hardcore and will follow the rules and take out the targets, even if some of the targets are 10 years old.
The Merrick's want to stop all of this from happening. They are trying to get the kids that are working with Calla Dean to understand that they do not want the Guides here just so they can take them out one at a time. And that killing innocent people is exactly what everyone is trying to fight against. They are trying to make them understand that starting fires and hurting others puts them in the same category as the Guides and that they are playing GOD now. Calla has the children so brainwashed that they stay true to her and try to do their part to destroy the Guides.
Kate & Hunter start to trust each other and become very close. You feel as if they are falling in love through an unspoken bond that they have with each other.
Hunter still is so unsure to trust that towards the end of the book he is still struggling with trusting the Merrick's. The Merrick's take in Hunter after his grandfather kicks him out of the house and his mother does nothing to stop it. Hunter is lost and lonely. Micheal takes him in and even though they all don't act like it they consider him family right away. Hunter does not feel this way however, Hunter feels like an outsider in this family. I felt the anger towards his mother. Even though it is not all her fault I feel anger that she did not stop his grandfather from bullying Hunter. She should be at her son's side no matter what and ask him what really happened before jumping to conclusions. I felt the sadness, loneliness, isolation, anger and abandonment from Hunter's character so much through the story that at times it was hard to keep reading. I was afraid Hunter would never accept anyone's love or trust anyone. And I would not blame him for that after all that he has gone through.
In the end Hunter is back with the Merrick's and I think Gabriel finally makes him understand that he is part of their family now. For better or worse he is their 5th brother now. And with that they are now the most powerful Elementals on the planet. The 5 together form a complete circle and will be more dangerous than ever. Good thing they are the good guys but it's a bad thing that more Guides will be coming.
I will have to wait to see what other adventures will lay ahead for these guys in Book #4 Secret due out in January 2014.
