An unexpected phone call heralds a new challenge for Mercy. Her mate Adam’s ex-wife is in trouble, on the run from her new boyfriend. Adam isn’t the kind of man to turn away a person in need—and Mercy knows it. But with Christy holed up in Adam’s house, Mercy can’t shake the feeling that something about the situation isn’t right.

Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when she learns that Christy has the farthest thing from good intentions. She wants Adam back and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to make it happen, including turning Adam’s pack against Mercy.

Mercy isn’t about to step down without a fight, but there’s a more dangerous threat circling. Christy’s ex is more than a bad man—in fact, he may not be human at all. As the bodies start piling up, Mercy must put her personal troubles aside to face a creature with the power to tear her whole world apart.
******************************************
Adam's ex-wife (Christy) is in trouble. Basically, she decided to have intimate relations  with a stranger that she just met and knew nothing about and then became scared of him. She decided to just leave without telling him. Now he is stalking her and she is afraid for her life.

Christy is very good a manipulating others and most of the time they are aware but Adam agrees to help her. Christy has to stay with Mercy and Adam because she is too scared to stay with someone else. Truth be told she also wants to make sure everyone loves her, hates Mercy and if possible breaks up Adam and Mercy in the process.

Mercy is as nice as she can be to a woman who undermines her authority in front of the pack, takes over her house (like she still lives there), answers Adams phone (telling her he can't talk to her at this time), and cries on command. I dislike Christy, I always have. I think that is what we are readers are supposed to do LOVE MERCY and DISLIKE anyone who DISLIKES Mercy.

In this story you see Adam, Jesse and Mercy support one another through the challenge of having Christy in their home. You also see what I felt was some of the pack that dislike Mercy maybe like her a little more than before for not only tolerating Christy and her antics but also because they all know that Mercy is unselfish and always tries to protect others.

I like Honey even though she tells Mercy she does not like her. Her reasons make sense but I feel that Patricia Briggs wants us to feel that Honey does like Mercy a little bit. Honey stands up to the truth and for Mercy even when everyone else is trying to protest against it. Honey will stand up because she knows that Mercy is right or that it is the best solution.

Honey and Mercy bond just a tiny bit in this part of the story. Mercy gets to meet another Coyote Walker, fights with a Volcano God, consorts with an escaped convict, is sexually harassed by a vampire, talks to a Gray Lord Fae, takes in 2 new wolves into the pack and tries to give the walking stick back to the fae AGAIN.

Patricia Briggs always keeps these story entertaining. I have been in love with this series since the moment I read the 1st line.
