Book Review: Axel (Corps Security) by Harper Sloan

(Corps Security - Book #1)
by Harper Sloan
Kindle Edition, 260 Pages
Source: Ebook - Own

Fate hasn’t always been friends with Isabelle West. In fact, fate has been a downright bitch.

Isabelle has learned the hard way how hard life can be when fate isn’t by your side. It can hand you dreams on silver platters, but it can snatch them right back and hand you nightmares. One thing Isabelle knew for sure fate was consistent with was taking away everything she ever loved.

For the last two years Isabelle has been slowly clearing the clouds of her past. Happiness is finally on the horizon. She has a thriving business, great friends, and her life back. All she has to do is jump over the last hurdle…her ex-husband.

When problems start causing her to fear her new life, and memories that are better left forgotten start rushing to the surface the last thing she needs is a ghost from her past to come knocking on her door.

Axel never thought he would look into the eyes of Isabelle West again, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to now. He’s carried his anger for so long he isn’t sure he can just turn it off, but when he is faced with protecting her and an unexpected desire to have her again, life gets a little more complicated.

How will Axel and Isabelle deal when all their cards are put on the table and everything they thought was true blows up in their faces?

**Note from the author--This book is intended for a mature reading audience and isn't suitable for younger readers.
***This review contains SPOILERS***

Axel & Izzy were highschool sweethearts. Axel left for the Marines and Boot Camp right after graduation. Izzy had one more year to go in school. Axel promised he would come back & marry her and start their life together.

Izzy's parents are suddenly killed 2 weeks later and she thought her WORLD ENDED. Now she needs to tell Axel. Given the letters to his foster mom Izzy gives her all the contact info for Axel to find her. Izzy is told horrible news about the LOVE OF HER LIFE and now FATE is her ENEMY.

Izzy has to try to move forward so she meets a girl Dee who helps her start over. She meets a nice guy and they marry. Brandon the APPEARS to be NICE GUY is far from nice. Now Izzy is scared for her life everyday and has no way out. Until she just can't take it anymore.

Axel comes back for Izzy but cannot locate her. He goes DARK with the Marines for about 4 years and searches for her once again only to see that she is now happily married to another man. His Izzy did not wait for him. Axel is pissed and will never trust his heart to another woman.

Izzy meets Greg through Dee after fighting her way out of an abusive marriage. They become very close friends. Greg is now her big brother and her protector.

Greg's marine buddies are moving from CA to team up with him in his Security Firm. All is a go and he calls in Reid to help Izzy with the bothersome soon to be (if he will ever sign the damn papers) EX.

Izzy meets Reid and her heart explodes...... it can't be him. He's dead. OMG

REVIEW-- I love the teenage LOVE these 2 characters share it is beautiful and pure. But I find this story to be so unreal. I mean I have no clue if a person like Izzy would ever be real. The scene where Izzy sees Reid/Holt/Axel (yes he has 3 names in the book, also annoying) she is startled, I get that. What I don't get is why you would after seeing him and the shock wearing off would you run so far from him and avoid him at all costs. She automatically thinks he just never came back. There has to be a reason that you believed him to be dead. I feel that her reaction is not normal. I mean if it was me the first thing out of my mouth would be "WTF, You're dead, you can't be here" the second thing that would happen is me FLINGING myself into his arms not caring what the hell happened just happy that he is here and alive and with me again in this world. My thoughts would be more like maybe he ended up with amnesia due to an injury and did not remember me, maybe he could not find me because his foster mother hated me and did not tell him, maybe after going into the marines he felt like I was better off with someone else. There would be a million things but with a love like that I would never ever think ---RUN, RUN, RUN---

With all that being said I felt like once Izzy finally spoke to Axel about what she believed, what was told , what she went through after he left..... you could feel that they still loved each other.

I found Izzy to be a serious mental case but with the past she had you can see why she is the way she is. I thought I would really dislike her character but she grew on me as I read on and her strength continued to grow. I found Axel to be to demanding and just too ALPHA for Izzy. I feel like Izzy needed someone more easy going. I did feel that Axel would go to any length to protector her but she did not need another male stating that SHE BELONGED TO HIM. That is what she is running from. She should not be running back towards the same thing.  I also dislike it when 2 girls constantly refer to each other as BITCH. Hey bitch or You skinny Bitch. That is not a term of endearment. If I guy ever said Hey Bitch we as females would want to punch him in the face. I feel the same with girls saying it. It is just wrong all around.

I did really like the love story of the two characters and how they found each other again. I like how they overcame all the forces trying to keep them apart. But I do feel that this story was a bit predictable and whinny for me. For some reason I still liked it.
